Michigan Chamber of Commerce Responds To Mark Schauer's Plan To Double-Tax Thousands Of Entrepreneurs And Small Business Owners
LANSING, Mich., Oct. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Michigan Chamber of Commerce today responded strongly to candidate Mark Schauer's plan to return to double-taxation of thousands of Michigan entrepreneurs and small business owners. According to recent news media reports, on Monday Democratic candidate for Governor Mark Schauer said that to pay for some of his programs he would broaden the base and lower the rate of Michigan's Corporate Income Tax.
"As a State Senator Mark Schauer voted for Governor Granholm's jobs-killing Michigan Business Tax (MBT). One of the worst aspects of the Schauer/Granholm MBT was double-taxation of income earned by thousands of entrepreneurs and small business owners under both the personal income tax and Michigan Business Tax," said Tricia Kinley, the Chamber's Senior Director of Tax & Regulatory Reform. "These hard-working entrepreneurs and small business owners pay millions of dollars each year in state income tax, sales & use taxes, state & local property taxes, state unemployment insurance taxes, and other state taxes and fees, noted Kinley.
"It's simply not true that these 95,000 small business owners and mid-sized companies don't pay state taxes," Kinley concluded.
"Michigan's economic competitiveness has improved dramatically over the past three years, especially in terms of state taxation. Mark Schauer's plan to turn back the clock to the MBT through double-taxation of entrepreneurs and small business owners would be a tax policy train wreck for Michigan. No wonder he waited until after the debate with Governor Snyder to start to talk about this giant tax hike," said Rich Studley, President & CEO of the Michigan Chamber.
"Apparently Mark Schauer wants to raise taxes on up to 95,000 of Michigan's job providers. Those employers, and their employees, deserve to hear the details of this dangerous scheme before November 4th. Or like his friend Nancy Pelosi, is the former Congressman saying they have to wait until after he sends them a tax bill to see what's in it?" Studley concluded.
The Michigan Chamber of Commerce is a statewide business organization representing approximately 6,400 employers, trade associations and local chambers of commerce. The Michigan Chamber represents businesses of every size and type in all 83 counties of the state. Michigan Chamber member businesses provide jobs to 1.5 million residents. It is one of only six state chambers accredited by the U.S. Chamber and one of only four state chambers accredited with distinction.
