Michigan Chamber of Commerce Commends Attorney General for Standing Up for the Rule of Law
LANSING, Mich., Aug. 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Michigan Chamber of Commerce today commended Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette for standing up for the rule of law and voicing his opinion that the union bosses' ballot proposal is unconstitutional.
"We commend Bill Schuette for standing up for the rule of law and taking action to protect Michigan's constitution from a deliberately misleading and blatantly unconstitutional ballot proposal," said Michigan Chamber President & CEO Rich Studley.
"From the beginning, we thought there were serious legal problems with the proposed constitutional amendment," said Jim Holcomb, Senior Vice President of Business Advocacy & General Counsel for the Michigan Chamber. "Now we know from our state's chief legal officer that our suspicions were accurate. The AG was clear that this proposal is unconstitutional and should not go on the ballot."
"At the end of the day, you can't rewrite Michigan's constitution with an unconstitutional proposal," Holcomb noted.
"Michigan's constitution is not for sale," said Studley. "This seriously flawed proposal does not belong on the November 2012 ballot."
