Michigan AFSCME Council 25 Announces Settlement With Muskegon Family Care Facility Today
Fired workers get wages and justice in quest to improve working conditions and patient care
MUSKEGON, Mich., Oct. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Michigan AFSCME Council 25 is announcing workers and management have reached a negotiate settlement agreement after months of strife caused by worker complaints about conditions at the Muskegon Family Care facility.
"For months we have been working hard to make sure people who work at Muskegon Family Care have their voices heard and their concerns addressed," said Ed McNeil special assistant to the president. "Today we are pleased to announce that workers who were fired have reached a mediated settlement with the company."
Michigan AFSCME Council 25 has been standing up for workers and patients at Muskegon Family Care. The efforts made a big difference as the labor union pushed to protect worker rights, improve patient care and hold management accountable for their actions. Today announcement is a significant milestone impacting people who seek care and are cared for at the facility because an unfair labor practice charge against the company has been settled equitably.
The settlement agreement calls for four workers who were fired to receive monetary compensation for the company's actions. In return, the workers have agreed to put the matter to rest and not pursue further legal action.
"We are pleased that we were able to come to agreement in this matter," said McNeil. "People have a right to insist on having good working conditions. Good working conditions at a healthcare facility mean better patient care and that is something everyone wants from a medical facility."
