BEDFORD, Mass., March 26, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Michael Stonebraker, who in 2009 co-founded in-memory database company VoltDB, has been awarded the 2014 ACM A.M. Turing Award for his fundamental contributions to the concepts and practices underlying modern database systems. Presented by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the award is known as the "Nobel Prize of Computing" for its recognition of the lifetime achievements of the computing industry's most influential pioneers. The award also features a $1 million prize, with financial support from Google, Inc. In addition to VoltDB, Dr. Stonebraker has founded eight other database companies.

Dr. Stonebraker has conducted research on database technologies for more than 40 years, leading to numerous innovations in fast data, streaming data and in-memory databases. Dr. Stonebraker is an adjunct professor at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (MIT CSAIL). He is also co-founder and co-director of the Intel Science and Technology Center for Big Data, which is based at MIT CSAIL. Dr. Stonebreaker was the main architect of the Ingres relational DBMS, the object-relational DBMS PostgreSQL and the federated data system, Mariposa. He is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
