Michael Loeb Keynotes at Advertising Week New York
Direct Marketing Association hall-of-fame inductee and Loeb.NYC founder outlines his first big exit, Synapse Group (Time Inc.), and inspires entrepreneurs at New York Startup Summit
NEW YORK, Oct. 23, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Michael Loeb, founder and CEO of Loeb.NYC, the New York City-based startup firm, delivered a keynote address to attendees of Advertising Week in New York on Tuesday, October 2nd. Loeb was selected to deliver an address prior to Advertising Week's Startup Summit, an event that featured presentations from nine startups focused on disciplines as varied as retail, AI, direct-to-consumer marketing, social media, and VR.
Michael Loeb -- a Direct Marketing Association Hall of Fame inductee -- gave a rare inside view of the challenges he faced during the creation of The Synapse Group, a multichannel marketing company that revolutionized the world of magazine subscriptions. He explained the push back he initially received when presenting his concept to Time Inc., his then employer. Loeb outlined how this resistance was related to views Time held on two specific magazine titles and their relationship with one, specific credit-card issuer. Through audacity and an unwillingness to limit Synapse's growth, Loeb outlined how he was able to expand his startup to partner with all major credit cards and a variety of publishers representing more than 700 magazine titles. In a well-known twist, Loeb, having built Synapse independently, ultimately sold the business to his former employer, Time Inc.
At the conclusion of his remarks, Loeb offered attendees an admission: "I wish I had started my entrepreneurial journey sooner. We are living in a time of major disruption and I encourage everyone here to not hesitate. Seize your passion, energy, and conviction and funnel it into making your startup a company that can truly create positive change for a specific industry or community."
The Startup Summit continued with a panel discussion from venture capitalists and investment strategists including Angel Mendoza of IPG Media Lab, Chris Young of Revel Partners, Katie Loeb of Loeb NYC, Marc Michel of Runway Venture Partners, and Hasan Arik of Redmill Solutions.
These panelists then judged Advertising Week's Startup Challenge that included nine startups. The process required each startup founder to deliver a five-minute pitch to the judges and audience. In the end, the panel recognized three of the startups as the most exceptional of the group. These included Narrativ, a company utilizing AI to improve Internet shopping, OmniVirt, a virtual-reality platform for advertisers and publishers, and Thnks, a gifting app that allows businesses to advance relationships through relevant gestures of appreciation sent via email and text.
Loeb's address at Advertising Week's Startup Summit is available here. An active philanthropist and angel investor, Loeb encourages startups to reach his investment desk at Loeb NYC.
