Miami Suicides in No Way Connected to Raelian Beliefs, Says U.S. Raelian Movement Rep
MIAMI, Nov. 10, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Following the sad news of the suicides of Miami residents Daniel Boli-Gbagra, his wife and her daughter, the U.S. Raelian Movement would like to send its condolences to their friends and extended family.
Donna Newman, Raelian Priestess in charge of Miami, commented, "What a sad event. Daniel and his wife were in contact with us sometime around 2000. They were living in New York City then and were occasionally in contact with us. Although they seemed to find the Raelian Movement's philosophy interesting, they also had a lot of mystical beliefs of their own that didn't fit with our philosophy. We tried to help them with some of those mystical beliefs, but then Daniel and his wife vanished and they haven't been on our member list for 7 years."
Newman said Raelians are known for their zest for life and that because they live with hedonistic values, deriving pleasure from every aspect of life, suicide is in total opposition to their values except in extreme circumstances, such as a person suffering from a physical illness that science cannot cure.
She added, "We as Raelians don't believe in a mystical afterlife. We believe there is nothing after death unless science intervenes. So suicide is very much against our values of living lives full of pleasure and happiness. Had I known Daniel and his family were in Miami and struggling, we certainly would have reached out to them. It's so sad to waste precious lives. This is one of the core values we try to bring to current society – that there is no heaven, no hell, no soul. This life is the only one we are sure to have."
Newman said Raelians believe that all life on Earth was created by an advanced race of human beings, who came here from another planet thousands of years ago. These beings were called "Elohim" in the Old Testament and many other ancient cultures have similar references to "creators coming from the stars."
