Mexico City to Host 3,000 Global City Officials for Discussions on November 16 - 21, 2010
Mayor Ebrard to lead local leaders in conferences about municipal issues, local governance, economy and climate change
MEXICO CITY, Nov. 16, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Mayor Marcelo Ebrard will welcome three thousand mayors, local and regional authorities to Mexico City for two international events beginning today, November 16th through Sunday, November 21st.
Beginning Tuesday, November 16th the Third Congress of United Cities and Local Governments' (UCLG) four-day conference will host more than 3,000 local officials from all over the world in various locations throughout Mexico City. The conference will give participants the chance to debate challenges facing cities and municipalities – including effective governance, economic development, innovation and building a more efficient city for 2030.
Immediately following the UCLG events, mayors, local leaders and climate experts from around the world will attend the World Mayors Summit on Climate on Sunday, November 21st. Hosted by the Government of Mexico City, the World Mayors Council on Climate Change (WMCCC), UCLG and ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, the one-day event will conclude with the signing of the Mexico City Pact, a commitment by cities to reduce GHG emissions in a transparent manner.

The World Mayors Summit on Climate (WMSC) is convened by Mexico City in conjunction with the World Mayors Council on Climate Change (WMCCC), ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG). These organizations unite thousands of authorities and local governments throughout the world. The Mexico City Pact establishes an international governmental mechanism for cities to counter climate change through a committing to reduce climate-relevant emissions and to monitor implementation of this commitment in a transparent and open process, using the using the Cities Climate Registry as the registration tool.
