MetroMile Launches New, Free Mobile App Feature to Help Drivers Avoid Costly Parking Tickets
Street sweeping notifications, the latest service from MetroMile, will help drivers avoid one of the most common parking citations, which cost San Francisco drivers millions each year
SAN FRANCISCO, March 19, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- MetroMile today announced the latest enhancement to its connected driving platform with a new, free feature to help drivers avoid one of the most common parking citations – street sweeping tickets – via MetroMile's free mobile app and connected car device.
MetroMile's platform of services is centered on a connected car device, the Metronome, that plugs into the OBD-II port of a vehicle, and a free app for iOS, currently in beta. The street sweeping feature uses the Metronome's onboard GPS to note the location of the parked vehicle. If the vehicle is located in a street sweeping zone, the MetroMile app will send a push notification twelve hours ahead of the street sweeping timeframe, and a reminder an hour before street sweeping occurs.
"At MetroMile, our goal is to reinvent urban driving, unlocking the data in vehicles to help drivers take control of the costs and time associated with owning a car," said Dan Preston, CEO of MetroMile. "Our street sweeping notifications are the latest feature in our platform of services that provide practical solutions to some of the largest challenges of urban car ownership. These tickets, which cost drivers more than $60 each in San Francisco, were reported to be the most common ticket issued in San Francisco in 2011, costing drivers $29 million. With our new feature, we're leveraging data to empower drivers to save the time and money associated with fighting and paying for these everyday citations."
The new street sweeping notification feature joins the variety of other services available on the MetroMile platform to help drivers save time and money. MetroMile offers the nation's only pay-per-mile car insurance. Designed for those who drive 10,000 miles per year or less, MetroMile's flagship insurance saves its average customer over $400 per year. MetroMile also offers a free iOS app that provides drivers with predictive insights to help them save time and gas on their daily drives, easily diagnose check engine lights, and find their car wherever it is parked. MetroMile currently offers its services to drivers in California, Washington, Oregon and Illinois, with additional market rollouts on the horizon.
Street sweeping notifications will initially be available to drivers in San Francisco, with additional markets to come. Notifications will be available to all San Francisco drivers by March 31, 2014. Street sweeping notifications, the MetroMile Metronome, and the beta app for iOS are all free of charge to drivers who sign up for MetroMile.
