Message from the Governor General of Canada on the occasion of Victoria Day
OTTAWA, May 18, 2015 /CNW/ - Once again, Victoria Day provides us with the opportunity to celebrate Her Majesty's birthday and to reflect upon the special relationship that exists between Canadians and the Royal Family.
In 2012, Canada celebrated the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the throne. Throughout the celebrations marking so rare an event, our country highlighted the breadth of her service in many different ways.
This year, the first Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships will be presented to Canadian students, who will pursue intercultural exchanges in Commonwealth countries. On September 9, Her Majesty will reach a historic milestone by becoming the longest-serving monarch in the history of the British monarchy, surpassing her great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria.
I continue to be impressed by the unwavering devotion and tireless commitment of Queen Elizabeth II. For over six decades, she has embodied our Canadian values and a sense of duty. If, like me, you are continuously amazed by the richness and diversity of our history, I invite you to make the most of this day to reflect on Her Majesty's countless contributions and to learn more about the Canadian Crown.
To Her Majesty, I offer my best wishes for health and happiness, and to all Canadians, may you enjoy a wonderful day!
