Mesa Law Group Joins Growing Community Accusing the Better Business Bureau Rating System as a Business Scam
PRACTICES OF BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU QUESTIONED AS PAY-FOR-PLAY SCAM
COSTA MESA, Calif., Dec. 9, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Mesa Law Group, an innovative California-based law firm with specialty financial services joined the ranks of companies across the nation that question the practices of the Better Business Bureau's rating system. Accused as being a "pay-for-play" scheme where companies receive good ratings only after purchasing membership, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) has been under attack that its role as a public service has become solely a private interest.
The case against the BBB has been growing over the years as prestigious companies like Disneyland and the Ritz Carlton, renowned for customer service, received an F rating because they were not members. "This rating system is really unworthy of consumer trust or confidence and sadly so because the BBB has a very long and laudable history of advocating and educating consumers," said Connecticut attorney general Richard Blumenthal in an interview with ABC News.
With over 17 years of experience and 5,000 customer retainers Mesa Law Group has long questioned its low score however the BBB has consistently refused to meet with Mesa or discuss the rating system. Mesa Law Group sees its rating as an unjust gauge of its business that amounts to a business scam. Yet like many companies, Mesa Law Group found that the only way to get better than a C rating was to purchase a membership and that speaking out against a low score can cause the BBB to retaliate with an F rating. By comparison, TrustLink, an affiliate of the BBB that also rates companies gives Mesa Law Group four out of five stars in a structured rating system that uses customer reviews to determine a grade.
The evidence the system is unfair and biased stacks up on merit because the BBB: will not show positive reviews nor show complaints resolved until the firm becomes a paid member, will not discuss ratings with non-member companies, and only allows select companies it chooses to be reviewed. For years the evidence and complaints against the BBB have grown to support an online community that regularly chronicles the impropriety of the BBB and their ratings. Just this month the BBB announced an investigation of its Los Angeles office that is a symptom of the larger problem.
"Mesa Law Group has been practicing law for 17 years with thousands of retainers for Real Estate, Insurance, Bankruptcy, and Workers Compensation cases and over that time had less than 40 complaints, and yet the BBB determines we should be rated a failure without any formal review...plus they refuse to speak with us to give an explanation," said Tazwell Randall, VP of Client Relations at Mesa Law Group. "The BBB's rating system is biased, unjust, and only has the excuse of poor management to elude charges of extortion or being a confidence scheme. A better alternative is needed."
