Meriden Department of Health & Human Services to Host Free Flublok® Influenza Vaccine Clinic Thursday February 21th, 2013
Flublok is the first egg-free, latex-free and preservative-free influenza vaccine
MERIDEN, Conn., Feb. 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Meriden Department of Health and Human Services will host a free walk-in Flublok influenza vaccine clinic on Thursday, February 21, from 9:00am to 5:00pm at 165 Miller Street in Meriden. Those between the ages of 18 to 49 are able to receive the vaccine. No appointments are necessary and you do not have to live in Meriden.
"The timing of this is great as we are still urging people to get vaccinated against the flu. Flu activity will likely last into May," said Lisa Pippa, Director of Health and Human Services. She added that, "Widespread flu activity continues. Meriden had 4 confirmed cases of influenza last year; this year the city has seen over 200 confirmed cases."
On January 16 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Flublok, a novel vaccine for the prevention of the flu in adults aged 18-49 years old. The FDA has called Flublok a revolutionary vaccine as no eggs or live influenza virus is used in its manufacturing process. In addition, the product does not contain preservatives (e.g., thimerosal), latex, adjuvants or other additives. Protein Sciences is donating the vaccine for the clinic so that it can be offered for free. "We are excited to collaborate with Protein Sciences and thank them for this kind donation," said Pippa.
Manon Cox, President and CEO of Protein Sciences, said, "We are thrilled to be working with the City of Meriden to get Flublok to the public." She added, "As the only egg-free influenza vaccine approved for use, Flublok may be the solution for healthcare providers and other individuals that have been unable to receive the traditional influenza vaccine for any reason."
