Mercury Solar Systems Wins NYSEIA 'Best Federal Government Project' Award for Jacob Javits Federal Office Building
Marks New York City's 1st Government Building to go Solar
PORT CHESTER, N.Y., May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Mercury Solar Systems, one of the leading solar integrators on the East Coast, today announced it has been awarded "Best Federal Government Project" by the NY Solar Energy Industries Association (NYSEIA) for its solar PV installation at Jacob K. Javits 26 Federal Plaza in New York City. The 6KC NYSEIA awards recognize the best and the brightest solar projects and industry champions in the Empire State and were presented at the NY Solar Industries 2010 Conference in Albany May 13-14th.
"We thank NYSEIA for recognizing our work on this historic project for New York City," said Jared Haines, President, Mercury Solar Systems. "26 Federal Plaza is not only the first government building to go solar, it is the highest mounted solar PV system in all of New York City!"
Installed in December 2009, the 11.34kW system consists of 54 panels and is expected to produce approximately 11,926 kWh annually. Over a thirty-year period this equates to recycling 6.6 million cans of soda; planting 34 acres of trees, which will meet the annual air needs for 612 people; and not driving 518,464 miles in a car.
"Mercury Solar Systems' government project was one of only 13 solar installations we recognized this year and is testament to their cutting edge work in this space," said NYSEIA President, Ron Kamen. "We look forward to showcasing more of the great solar projects being embarked on across the State in the years ahead."

About 6KC
6KC stands for 6, K (1,000), C (Celcius). Now that it's spelled out, it may ring some bells. 6,000 degrees Celcius is the rough, rounded-up estimate of the temperature of the surface of the Sun. The 6KC Awards were created by NYSEIA to recognize the tangible success of specific projects and individuals, not theories or concepts that have yet to reach the "surface." Furthermore, as the Sun is the industry's power source, it made sense to reference it in naming the new awards.
