Mental Health Services are Covered for Oklahomans with Health Insurance
OKLAHOMA CITY, Aug. 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- After the tragic death of Labor Commissioner Mark Costello, Oklahomans may have questions about mental health insurance coverage. The Oklahoma Insurance Department (OID) stands ready to educate consumers who may not understand their policy.
"Mark was first and foremost a leader. Despite his position as Labor Commissioner, Mark was passionate about a number of reforms he believed would transform our state for the good," said Insurance Commissioner John D. Doak. "But perhaps the one that hit close to home for Mark was his desire to see mental health addressed in a meaningful way. As these discussions on mental health unfold in the days, weeks and months ahead, we want Oklahomans to know that mental health services are covered under your regular health policy."
All insurance plans are required by law to cover mental health and substance abuse services. This includes behavioral health treatment, such as psychotherapy and counseling. They also include mental and behavioral health inpatient services and substance abuse disorder treatment.
Mental health is an issue that affects many Oklahomans, but often is uncomfortable to talk about. OID is committed to talking to Oklahomans about their health insurance policy and how it applies to mental health reimbursements.
Services will be held this weekend to pay tribute to Commissioner Costello's legacy. Many organizations help those who suffer from mental illness. The Costello family has requested donations in lieu of flowers. Donations can be sent to: National Alliance of Mental Health Oklahoma, Attn: Mark Costello Fund, 3037 NW 63rd, Suite 104 W, Oklahoma City, OK 73116.
