NEW YORK, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Mendeley, a rapidly growing London-based technology startup that provides the world's largest online research collaboration platform, announced today that it has opened an office in New York. "Our strongest growth is in the U.S., so it made sense to open another office and work closer with the academic community here," said Jan Reichelt, co-founder of Mendeley. "We are very excited to see that researchers from some of the world's leading institutions—including Harvard, Columbia and Stanford—are using our platform to improve their research process. Also, New York has such a vibrant start-up community and we are thrilled be part of it."
Used by more than 500,000 academics and industry researchers, Mendeley continues to gain traction globally and, with more than 35 million indexed documents, is on track to become the world's largest research database. Among a series of awards earned in Europe, Mendeley was most recently named "Start-up Most Likely to Change the World for the Better" at the Guardian Activate 2010 Summit.
Mendeley's desktop software automatically extracts relevant information from documents, allowing researchers to organize a personal digital library as well as manage annotations and references effortlessly. Researchers can then tap into Mendeley's network and make their reading collections more widely accessible. By anonymously aggregating this usage data, Mendeley can identify real-time trends such as the most widely-read research.
Jeffrey Lancaster, a Chemistry PhD student at Columbia University, stated: "Mendeley has brought together a common sense attitude with cutting edge software development to satisfy a long-standing time sink for scientists: how to search, organize and share literature resources. I am confident that it will become an indispensible tool for anyone who is serious about understanding the scholarship of their field."
"We know from researchers using our platform that our technology is accelerating the research process, which we hope will ultimately bring faster solutions to today's scientific, technological and engineering challenges," said Jonathan Keidan, senior vice president of business development at Mendeley U.S. "That means life-saving drugs and more advanced products could come to market in much shorter timeframes. We see our technology having applications not only for higher education but also for government and corporate America."
