Memory-Impaired Silverado Senior Living Residents Create Mouth-Watering Pie Recipe

KINGWOOD, Texas, Dec. 14, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Ten women with Alzheimer's and other memory-impairing diseases set themselves a challenge for the holiday season:  Develop a mouth-watering apple pie recipe and share it with others.  They have succeeded at their endeavor, producing a pie that tasters have pronounced as scrumptious.

The women are members of the resident cooking club at Silverado Senior Living-Kingwood in Kingwood, Tex.  They held group discussions and test-bakes this fall to devise and refine what they have named "Silverado Grandma's Apple Pie."

Here is the recipe:

Silverado Grandma's Apple Pie

2 9-inch unbaked pie crusts

1/2 cup unsalted butter

3 tablespoons all purpose flour

1/2 cup white sugar

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 cup water

8 granny smith apples, peeled, cored and sliced

1 tablespoon cinnamon

1 tablespoon vanilla

1 tablespoon lemon

Melt butter in a sauce pan. Stir in flour to form a paste. Add white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and water, bring to a boil. Reduce temperature and simmer 5 minutes. Toss the apples with lemon juice. Meanwhile, place the bottom crust in your pan. Fill with apples, mounded slightly, gently pour the sugar and butter mixture over the apples. Cover with the other crust, poking holes in the top, or with a lattice work. Spread some melted butter over the top of the crust and sprinkle with sugar.

Bake 15 minutes at 425 degrees. Reduce the temperature to 350 degrees and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes.
