Memorial Hospital Gardena Recognized by Healthgrades as a Five-Star Recipient
GARDENA, Calif., Dec. 11, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Memorial Hospital of Gardena (MHG) has been recognized as a 5-Star recipient in Orthopedics for Hip Fracture Treatment, in Gastrointestinal for Esophageal/Stomach Surgeries, in Critical Care for Treatment of Sepsis, and in Labor and Delivery for both Vaginal Delivery and C-Section Delivery according to this year's evaluation from Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 34 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.*
These achievements are part of findings released by Healthgrades and are featured in their 2018 Report to the Nation. The new report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally.
This variation in care has a significant impact on health outcomes. For example, for the 2018 Report to the Nation, Healthgrades compared hospitals with statistically better than expected performance (5-stars), as a group, to those with statistically worse than expected performance (1-star), as a group, and found that from 2014-2016:
- Patients treated for Sepsis in hospitals with 5 stars for in-hospital mortality as compared to hospitals with 1 star have, on average a 39.7% lower risk of dying.**
- Patients treated for Esophageal/Stomach Surgeries in hospitals with 5 stars for in-hospital mortality as compared to hospitals with 1 star have, on average a 78.4% lower risk of dying.**
- Patients having Hip Fracture Repair in hospitals with 5 stars as compared to hospitals with 1 star have, on average a 45.1% lower risk of experiencing complications while in the hospital.**
Additionally, for the 2017 Women's Care Report, Healthgrades compared hospitals with 5 stars as a group to those with 1 star as a group and found that from 2013-2015, C-Section Delivery patients had, on average a 66.0% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital and Vaginal Delivery patients a 54.9% lower risk of experiencing a complication.***
"It is an honor for MHG to receive this prestigious recognition from Healthgrades," said Kathy Wojno, CEO of Memorial Hospital of Gardena. "This is a true testament to the hard work and dedication of our clinicians and employees who strive to provide safe and exceptional care to each and every patient."
"Consumers place high value on information about hospital quality and use it to evaluate their choices for care," said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer, Healthgrades. "Hospitals that have achieved recognition for their quality outcomes prove their commitment to their patients and their community at large."
*For its analysis, Healthgrades evaluated approximately 45 million Medicare inpatient records for nearly 4,500 short-term acute care hospitals nationwide to assess hospital performance in 32 common conditions and procedures, and evaluate outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 17 states. Healthgrades recognizes a hospital's quality achievements for cohort-specific performance, specialty area performance, and overall clinical quality. Individual procedure or condition cohorts are designated as 5-star (statistically significantly better than expected), 3-star (not statistically different from expected) and 1-star (statistically significantly worse than expected) categories.
