In honor of National Medical Assistants Recognition Week (Oct. 15-19), Medtech College and Institute campuses from the Midwest to metro Washington, D.C., and south to Florida will host celebratory events on Monday, Oct. 15, to honor their students and graduates for being at the heart of health care in America.
On behalf of its medical assistant (MA) students and graduates, Medtech College will present a $2,500 donation to the Imagine America Foundation to help fund scholarships for MA students. This is in addition to the schools' $50,000 annual contribution, as well as numerous other scholarships.
Medtech campuses will host breakfasts and lunches that include presentation of Medical Assistants Recognitions Week proclamations issued by their respective governor, mayor, or other elected official; participation of business and clinical partner VIPs; and a return to campus by MA graduates who now are succeeding in the profession to offer insights and advice to current students.
"Every Medtech campus offers Medical Assistant programs to help educate and provide hands-on training to students for this all-important career. They are the backbone of our health care system and, upon graduation, our students have become extraordinary health care professionals," said Medtech College President and CEO John L. Hopkins. "Because the health care field continues to grow every year, there always will be a need for skilled medical assistant practitioners in communities across the country – a need our graduates are helping to fill."
Additionally, on Wednesday, Oct. 17 – Medical Assistants Recognition Day - Medtech medical assistant instructors will conduct a live chat on Facebook and Twitter to answer questions and help raise awareness for the profession's substantial contribution to the quality of health care being delivered nationwide. Join the conversation from 1 p.m. until approximately 1:30 p.m. CDT (2-2:30 p.m. EDT) on Facebook (http://facebook.com/medtechedu) or by tweeting with the #MARWeek hashtag. Submit questions in advance to [email protected].
Medical Assistant was ranked in the Top 10 Hottest Jobs for 2012 listings by MSN and TechMediaNetwork and, in September, Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine included medical assisting at Number 10 on its rankings for best college majors that can lead to lucrative careers (reported on NBC's Today, Sept. 4, 2012).
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook supports those rankings, forecasting excellent employment opportunities for Medical Assistant graduates based on a projected 31 percent growth in jobs through 2020. According to BLS figures, by the end of 2012 there will be approximately 560,000 filled medical assistant positions in the United States, with nearly 131,000 new jobs expected to be added within eight years. That's an average of 16,355 jobs that will need to be filled each year.
Health care opportunities likely will grow even more as technological advances, such as electronic health records (EHR), and an expanding senior population lead to an increased need for health professionals.
Medtech College is nationally accredited with several campuses also offering accredited diplomas and degrees in nursing, along with several other health care professions.
