MedPage Today(R) Approved to Offer AAFP Credit for Its News-Based Continuing Medical Education Activities
LITTLE FALLS, N.J., Jan. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- MedPage Today, the innovative provider of real-time, 24/7 medical news coverage and Continuing Medical Education (CME) for physicians and other clinicians, has received approval from the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) to offer AAFP Elective credit for its news-based CME activities.
"Family physicians must have a broad understanding of many different diseases and medical conditions, and need to maintain their competency and obtain new knowledge and skills in a number of disciplines. MedPage Today is a smart choice for family physicians seeking to maintain and enhance their skills easily and conveniently, and now they can earn AAFP CME credit as well," said Robert Stern, CEO and president of MedPage Today.
Realizing that the family doctor's effectiveness depends on sound, up-to-date continuing education, AAFP requires that members must complete a minimum of 150 hours of approved CME every three years.
"Family medicine is a complex and unique medical specialty for a number of reasons," Stern added. "In most cases, the family physician represents the patient's initial encounter with the healthcare system, works to create a long-term relationship with both the patient and his/her family, oversees the patient's overall medical care, and serves as the patient's advocate in arranging referrals to specialists and coordinating care. The family physician's exposure to a broad range of up-to-date diagnostic, treatment, and management CME is the foundation for solid medical care."
MedPage Today Offers AAFP Credit
MedPage Today's News-Based CME has been reviewed and is acceptable for Elective credits by the AAFP. Each MedPage Today article is approved for .25 Elective credits.
About AAFP
Founded in 1948, AAFP is one of the largest national medical organizations, with more than 94,600 physicians and medical students nationwide. It is the only medical society devoted solely to primary care.
In the increasingly fragmented world of health care where many medical specialties limit their practice to a particular organ, disease, age or sex, family physicians are dedicated to treating the whole person across the full spectrum of ages. Family medicine's cornerstone is an ongoing, personal patient-physician relationship focused on integrated care.
Nearly one in four of all office visits are made to family physicians. That is 208 million office visits each year - nearly 83 million more than the next largest medical specialty. *(SOURCE: www.aafp.org)
