NEW YORK, July 21, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Medley, a membership-based community redefining professional and personal growth, has announced its launch today. Medley is founded by two Black women entrepreneurs, Edith Cooper and Jordan Taylor, and backed by a group of entrepreneurs and angel investors including Jen Rubio, co-founder of Away, Tim Armstrong, founder of dtx and former CEO of AOL, Damien Dwin, founder of Brightwood Capital, and Foundation Capital.
Edith and Jordan founded Medley on the belief that the most powerful learning often comes from hearing the stories and perspectives of those different to you. Unlike existing networks, Medley connects people who, because of their diverse backgrounds, would not ordinarily be brought together.
Upon joining Medley, each member is matched to a group of seven others who meet monthly under the guidance of a certified coach. Additionally, members have access to original programming including panels, forums and workshops with industry experts and thought leaders, all of which has generally been reserved for C-Suite executives.
The founders bring a unique set of experiences as mother and daughter. Edith Cooper was a Partner at Goldman Sachs for twenty years, spending the last ten as the Global Head of Human Capital Management. She is an independent board director at Etsy, Slack, and EQT. Jordan Taylor was Chief of Staff of the media company Mic, as well as a consultant at Boston Consulting Group and a Baker Scholar from Harvard Business School.
"The close-knit groups that lead to our most profound growth as people — ones we might recognize from religious communities, sporting teams and childhood neighborhoods — are hard to maintain in our day-to-day life. With Medley, we are using technology and our expertise to create similar meaningful, supportive, and powerful group experiences," stated Taylor.
For now, Medley is a virtual membership: Medley Group sessions take place via video conference each month, and members actively engage with others – sharing, listening and reflecting with the guidance and facilitation of a coach. Medley had initially planned to launch a physical space in New York City to convene the community, but due to COVID-19 had to pivot their plans. Even so, Medley's mission to harness community for individual and societal growth remains the same.
"In my experience, I've seen firsthand that people who grow the most have all had people outside of their day-to-day lives that they could be their authentic selves with and turn to for advice and encouragement," said Cooper. "The perspective gained gives them a confidence that translates to both their careers and personal lives – and that is what Medley provides for its members."
Medley is launching with their founding membership, and while many Medley members pay for their membership out of pocket, employers also have the option to sponsor employees as a way to invest in their continued growth. Supporting their desire to create an inclusive community, Medley has a sliding scale for the annual membership fee. Any deeply curious, open-minded, and growth-focused individual is encouraged to apply.
