RALEIGH, N.C., Dec. 21, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Medical Science Liaison Society (MSL Society), the only 501(c)(3) non-profit organization exclusively dedicated to advancing the medical science liaison (MSL) profession, has released the first-ever official global non-regulatory industry-wide guidelines for MSL activities.
The guidelines are the result of ongoing feedback over the last several years from the MSL community, who expressed the need for a reference document to help standardize the understanding of the various activities of MSLs.
The guidelines, which are available online at: https://www.themsls.org/msl-guidelines, contain comprehensive recommendations for the activities of MSLs in an effort to promote industry standards across the pharma, biotech, medical devices and other healthcare industries, as well as create a clearer understanding of the evolving role of MSLs.
Developing the guidelines involved collaboration over a 24-month period with a large group of MSL leaders, MSL trainers, MSLs, along with extensive input from a U.S. based pharmaceutical association. In addition, during an open-comment period over 1,500 MSLs and MSL leaders from over 60 countries provided feedback for each section of the guidelines, which were reviewed and evaluated by the Guidelines Committee.
Dr. Cherie Hyder, Head of Medical Affairs, Alimera Sciences commented: "I am pleased to have contributed to the first ever global MSL guidelines, which have been developed over the past few years with much input from across the globe! The guidelines serve as a global framework for a more standardized and increasingly valuable role that MSLs bring to those they support and ensure that the primary essence of the MSL role, fostering ethical KOL relationships, is not lost as the MSL role continues to evolve."
Dr. Samuel Dyer, CEO of the MSL Society commented: "Thanks to the members of the Guidelines Committee who volunteered during the countless webinar discussions and helped with the multiple versions of the document, as well as those across the global MSL community who provided valuable feedback during the open comment period. Their contribution helped us develop a robust set of guidelines that will advance individual careers, and the overall MSL profession."
