DENVER, Nov. 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- EDUCAUSE -- To better optimize its resources and serve its students, faculty and staff, West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) is using Oracle Cloud. With a complete, unified platform, the school can now ensure secure, dynamic management of its operations and deliver a highly engaging and efficient experience to students and staff alike. Since launching the new platform just months ago, WVSOM has already cut operational costs by approximately $50,000.
WVSOM is a leader in educating osteopathic physicians for primary care medicine in rural areas. It prides itself on being at the intersection of technology and medicine, combining a human touch with cutting-edge medical technology to produce the best educated, most caring and compassionate osteopathic physicians in the world. Nationally recognized for its efforts, the medical school knew it needed to invest in the latest IT technology to best position the school for overall success. Further, the school also recognized the importance of delivering a modern, personalized, experience to its technologically savvy students and staff. After evaluating several solutions, WVSOM selected Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, due to its competitive pricing – more than one-third the cost of other providers – and for the platform's advanced security benefits.
"As a medical school focused on educating our students on cutting-edge medical technologies, WVSOM saw the importance of enhancing the experience of our students and staff by also investing in advanced technology across all school functions," said Kim Ransom, Chief Technology Officer at WVSOM. "With Oracle Cloud, WVSOM was not only able to quickly implement the latest in enterprise technology, but we also had the peace of mind knowing that we were doing so with the level of security and cost efficiency that is critical to running our school."
Critical to the success of the project was Oracle Cloud's ability to work with WVSOM's existing investment in Ellucian Banner. Today, the system is comprised of two primary components including a self-service module for students, staff and faculty and an administrative module to holistically manage the school's operational functions including HR, accounts receivable, accounts payable, financial aid and admissions.
"Universities big and small are faced with a unique challenge – students that understand and expect personalized, seamless experiences enabled by technology while still having to operate on limited budgets and resources," said Pat Mungovan Oracle's group vice president of Higher Education and Research. "Oracle Cloud is empowering WVSOM with enterprise-grade technologies to meet the needs of its entire school community, all while keeping its focus on remaining one of the top medical schools in the country."
