Medical Implant Manufacturer RMI Achieves AS9100C Aerospace Certification to Provide Products to the Aviation, Defense and Space Industries
NOBLESVILLE, Ind., Jan. 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- RMI (www.rmi.us.com), a Noblesville, Indiana contract manufacturer of orthopedic implants and surgical instruments, has passed formal certification audits to provide components to the aviation, defense, and space industries.
Over the past year RMI has worked to enhance their quality management system to comply with the requirements of AS9100C. Major aerospace and defense manufacturers worldwide require AS9100 certification from their suppliers as a condition of competing for their contracts.
RMI expects to immediately begin developing supply relationships among larger aerospace manufacturers for such equipment as components for aircraft engines and braking and landing gear systems. This action is intended to supplement RMI's existing medical device business and will be supported in its new, 33,000 square-foot manufacturing facility in Noblesville.
The move to aerospace manufacturing is a logical one for RMI because of the company's experience in building precise medical instruments with critical tolerances, short cycle times and repeatable results, says President and General Manager Jim Evans.
"We have always been in the failure-is-not-an-option business," Evans says. "RMI has invested in the people, equipment and processes to support our new AS9100C quality system. This is an extension of the quality foundation built upon our ISO 13485 certification and FDA registration." Twenty-seven people are currently employed at RMI.
Though RMI is just entering into aerospace production, its legacy dates back to 1995 as a contract manufacturer of medical implants and equipment. It supplies thousands of implantable products, manufactured from titanium, stainless steel, and PEEK plastic, as well as the specialized tools used by surgeons to install them.
BACKGROUND:
AS9100 is a widely adopted and standardized quality management system for the aerospace industry. Originally released in October 1999, the latest revision C of the specification combines and harmonizes requirements defined by the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) in the Americas and the European Association of Aerospace Industries in Europe. AS9100C fully incorporates the entirety of ISO9001:2008, while adding additional requirements relating to quality and safety.
RMI's audit was performed at its Noblesville plant by NSF International, an accredited, third-party certification company that provides management system registrations for a wide variety of industries.
