SACRAMENTO, Calif., Feb. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Many investors in Deepal Wannakuwatte's enterprises considered him to be a friend, both loyal and charming. Charges in a Sacramento federal criminal complaint, if proven, would expose him as a liar, a cheat and a fraud.
"My phone started ringing early Saturday morning," says Michael Hackard of Hackard Law. "Clients and prospective clients wanted to know about what actions to take in light of the federal charges pending against the manager of their savings and pension money." It's clear that dozens of California investors staked their financial future on their belief in Wannakuwatte. Several investors told Hackard that they were "distressed and couldn't sleep. They felt betrayed. It feels like someone punched them in the stomach." They thought that they had invested with a remarkable entrepreneur. Investors were "shocked" by the Sacramento Bee's headline "Tennis team owner jailed, indicted . . . (and) accused of Investor Fraud, Ponzi Scheme."
The FBI affidavit indicates that since 2004 Wannakuwatte has raked in more than $125 million from investors. Hackard indicates his clients stand to lose millions if the charges are true and their investments are gone. "At this point we've engaged an investigator and will be amassing documents to support claims against Wannakuwatte and his partners." Hackard's clients have expressed their strong desire and commitment to assist law enforcement efforts that have been digging into Wannakuwatte's business affairs. Hackard's clients say that this could happen to anyone– many invested because they knew Wannakuwatte and thought that he was a friend. They don't want this to happen to anyone else.
