MEDIA ALERT: Daily Fantasy Sports Bill Passes in New York: DraftKings Applauds State Legislators for Passing Comprehensive Daily Fantasy Sports Legislation
New regulatory framework offers transparency and consumer protections for millions of New Yorkers to enjoy the games they love
ALBANY, N.Y., June 18, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- DraftKings today applauded passage of daily fantasy sports (DFS) legislation in New York that would allow millions of New Yorkers to resume playing their favorite games. The legislation currently awaits Governor Cuomo's signature into law.
"DraftKings is extremely pleased that the New York Assembly and Senate have voted to provide a sensible framework for regulating daily fantasy sports in the Empire State," said DraftKings Co-Founder and CEO Jason Robins. "Because of their actions, as well as the unwavering commitment from our supporters, millions of New Yorkers may soon be able to continue playing the games they love. From the very beginning, we have been committed to working with New York officials to develop model daily fantasy sports regulations that ensure transparency and robust consumer protections in the biggest U.S. market. This is a significant victory not only for DraftKings, but for the people of New York and daily fantasy sports enthusiasts throughout the country."
The bill, A10736/S8153 promotes a DFS model and community of play that is transparent and offers appropriate consumer protections. The legislation solidifies DraftKings' presence in the critically important state of New York, which joins more than 40 other states in which DraftKings operates legally.
DraftKings will continue working closely with state officials during the implementation of the new rules and regulations. If the bill is signed into law, New Yorkers will soon be able to log onto draftkings.com and continue playing their favorite games.
A recent poll showed that more than 60 percent of New Yorkers believe that adults should be able to play DFS. DraftKings championed sound regulation and smart consumer protections because they believe these contests will only continue to be successful if they are enjoyed responsibly, if players understand that everyone is playing with the same set of tools and information and if contestants know that their money and data are secure.
"We would like to thank Senator John Bonacic and Assembly Member Gary Pretlow for their leadership on this issue," Robins continued. "We are hopeful that Governor Cuomo will sign this important bill into law, and we will continue working closely with state officials on sound implementation of all forthcoming rules and regulations."
The bill includes the following:
- Clarification that fantasy sports is a game of skill and not illegal gambling;
- Strong and robust consumer protections;
- and, taxes and fees for New York.
