ORLANDO, Fla., April 14, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- With the start of the Atlantic hurricane season barely two weeks away, the Insurance Information Institute (I.I.I.) will have three of its insurance experts in Orlando at the National Hurricane Conference available to answer questions and provide media interviews.
The I.I.I. staff at the conference can provide information on the economic impact of hurricanes as well as consumer-related information to help people understand their insurance coverage and learn the steps they can take to both control the cost of coverage and mitigate against hurricane damage. In Orlando this week are:
- Jeanne Salvatore, senior vice president, Public Affairs & chief communications officer: [email protected];cell phone: 917-612-4088
- Lynne McChristian, Florida representative: [email protected];cell phone: 813-480-6446
- Elianne González, Hispanic press officer: [email protected]; cell phone: 954-684-4410
The National Hurricane Center will discuss the 2014 hurricane forecast at the conference. Early predictions for storms indicate that it will be a less active season; however, three major storms are still probable.
Wind damage from both tropical storms and hurricanes is covered under standard homeowners, renters and business insurance policies. Flood damage resulting from storm surge caused by hurricanes is excluded under standard policies; however, flood coverage is available from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), and from a few private insurance companies.
Damage to cars from hurricanes is covered under the optional comprehensive portion of an auto insurance policy. This includes wind damage, flooding and even falling objects such as tree limbs. More than 75 percent of all Americans choose to purchase comprehensive auto coverage.
