MEDIA ADVISORY: Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal, AARP Team up to Announce Major Step for 4M Family Caregivers
NEW YORK, April 17, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal joins AARP and other advocates for an announcement about the CARE Act, legislation aimed at helping New York's four million family caregivers.
Who: Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal (D/WFP-Manhattan)
Beth Finkel, AARP New York, State Director
Matt Kudish, Alzheimer's Association NYC Chapter, Senior VP of Caregiver Services
Patrick Aitcheson, Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE), Chief of Staff
Family Caregivers from New York City
About four dozen AARP Members
When: Monday, April 20, 2015, 11 a.m.
Where: Steps of City Hall
Why: There are more than a million family caregivers age 50 and older in New York City, including over 215,000 in Manhattan. Even more are expected to assume caregiving duties in the coming years as the population ages. They care for older parents, spouses and loved ones, but they're often unprepared for the tasks they'll need to perform when their loved ones are discharged from the hospital. And every year, hospitals discharge about half a million adult city residents, 140,000 in Manhattan and 1.6 million statewide to their homes.
Assemblymember Rosenthal and AARP are teaming up to push for the CARE Act, which would ensure family caregivers are offered instruction and demonstration in tasks they'll need to perform at home when their loved ones are discharged from the hospital - resulting in improved care for older loved ones at less cost to taxpayers and the health care system.
