Media Advisory - 2012 Canada Gairdner Awards to be Unveiled March 21
TORONTO, March 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ - The Canada Gairdner Awards are among the world's most important biomedical research awards. A source of national pride, the Awards are a major indicator of leading scientific discovery. Over the past 10 years, 18 of 27 Nobel Prize in Medicine winners had previously received a Canada Gairdner Award. In fact, one in four of all Canada Gairdner recipients has received a Nobel.
The award categories are:
- The Canada Gairdner International Awards recognize individuals from a diversity of fields for seminal discoveries or contributions to medical science (five winners).
- The Canada Gairdner Global Health Award recognizes someone who is responsible for a scientific advancement that has made, or has the potential to make, a significant impact on health in the developing world (one winner).
- The Canada Gairdner Wightman Award is given to a Canadian who has demonstrated outstanding leadership in medicine and medical science throughout his/her career (one winner).
