MEDFORD, N.Y., June 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- During the month of June, Medford, Suffolk County Nursing Home Medford Multicare Center supports Aphasia Awareness Month in solidarity with those living with aphasia. Since aphasia primarily strikes the elderly, Medford Multicare Center is proud to help community efforts in raising awareness to numerous programs and health initiatives that educate the public about aphasia and its effects.
Aphasia is a language disorder usually initiated by a stroke, causing one to begin having difficulty remembering words and to gradually lose the ability to speak, read and write. While aphasia is most common among senior citizens, it can affect people of all ages and genders. Aphasia can take on many different forms and can be as severe as to cause one to lose the ability to communicate, or as mild as to result in an individual forgetting certain words or names. A full recovery from aphasia is possible in some cases, though if symptoms last longer than 2 months after the initial stroke a complete recovery is unlikely.
Throughout the month of June the National Aphasia Association (NAA) will teach the public techniques on how to communicate with those affected by the disease in an attempt to bring the issue to national attention. Currently about one million Americans are impacted, with 200,000 people developing the disorder every year. Aphasia is more common than Parkinson's disease and cerebral palsy, yet most Americans have never heard of it. "Aphasia is a disease that, while not very known amongst the public, unfortunately strikes many from the senior citizen population. As a Multicare Center, it is our duty to be a source of health information for our community and to help spread awareness about aphasia and its impact on seniors," remarked Norman Rausman, of Medford Multicare Center for Living.
