MedAllies selected to present its Direct Solution at upcoming ONC event
Chief Medical Officer Holly Miller, MD, to participate in a panel discussion
FISHKILL, N.Y., May 22, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- MedAllies has been selected to demonstrate its Direct HISP Solution, an innovative tool to optimize patient care, safety and efficiency through the Direct exchange of crucial patient data, at the ONC's 2012 Direct Demonstration Showcase.
Along with health IT vendors NextGen Healthcare and Greenway Medical Technologies, MedAllies will demonstrate the capabilities of this technology at the Showcase, part of the Direct Implementation and Adoption Summit scheduled for May 31 and June 1 in Washington, D.C. at the Grand Hyatt Hotel. (To learn more about the meeting, visit wiki.directproject.org.)
The ONC also has invited Holly Miller, MD, MBA, FHIMSS, chief medical officer of MedAllies, to give a presentation during the event as part of a panel on Direct with fellow thought leaders. She will discuss MedAllies' use of and plans for Direct and explain why EHR vendors should embrace Direct.
The demonstration will involve a common scenario called a closed-loop referral: A primary care physician (PCP), using Greenway EHR, will request a patient consultation with a cardiologist, using NextGen® Ambulatory EHR, after which the cardiologist will return the consultation report to the PCP. MedAllies presented a similar demonstration at the ONC Annual Grantees meeting in November 2011 and the HIMSS12 Interoperability Showcase this past February.
MedAllies was one of only seven sites to launch a pilot for the Direct Project, a national effort spearheaded by the ONC to fast-track electronic information exchange. Each pilot was different and, in MedAllies' hands, Direct became a tool to advance primary care models that emphasize care coordination and improved care transitions.
By providing a closed-loop referral, Direct allows vital clinical information to be exchanged between a patient's care providers on disparate EHR systems. "What Direct does is virtualize an electronic health record. It allows information to flow across EHR systems, in a manner consistent with patient-centered care, and enhances standard clinician workflow," Miller explained. "Direct will protect patients and, by reducing readmissions and adverse events, and enhancing care efficiency, it can help control health care costs."
