Medal of Honor Recipients Recognize Hometown Heroes

ARLINGTON, Va., Oct. 31, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Since 2008, recipients of the Medal of Honor – our nation's highest award for wartime acts of valor – have recognized local heroes with the Congressional Medal of Honor Society's Citizen Honors award.

The Citizen Honors award recognizes Americans who have risked their lives in grave situations to save others or who have made a significant difference in the lives of others through their selfless service.

The 79 living Medal of Honor Recipients believe these hometown heroes have demonstrated the traits that are embodied in the Medal of Honor: courage, sacrifice, integrity, and patriotism.

Speaking about the Citizen Honors program, Medal of Honor Recipient Drew Dix said, "We've received a lot of honors over our lives and wearing the Medal [of Honor] is the highest of all. We like to turn it around and use this opportunity to recognize citizens that know the significance of sacrifice and courage, they have certainly demonstrated that in their deeds."

Citizen honorees are nominated by Americans everywhere who think an individual's courage or service is deserving of recognition. The nomination period is now open to the public and will close on Jan.10, 2015.

Nominees must be U.S. citizens, 18 or older. Two types of awards are given, both of which must have occurred within the last three years: one for a singular act of heroism, the other for a series of acts of long-term selfless service. Nominees who are deceased are eligible for both awards.

After careful selection by the recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor, those chosen for Citizen Honors will receive their awards on National Medal of Honor day on Mar. 25, 2015 in Washington, D.C.
