Medal of Honor Recipients on Memorial Day seek heroes to recognize

ARLINGTON, Va., May 26, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As Americans commemorate the service and sacrifice of the men and women of our Armed Forces this Memorial Day, America's 76 living Medal of Honor Recipients requested today that citizens across the Nation nominate local heroes to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor Society's 2017 Citizen Honors Awards. The awards, sponsored by The Boeing Company, will be presented at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., on National Medal of Honor Day, Saturday, March 25, 2017.

"For nine years, my fellow Recipients and I have recognized citizens from across the country for their acts of courage and selfless service," said Tom Kelley, Medal of Honor Recipient and president of the Society. "It's a privilege for us to identify and recognize the citizen heroes of our Nation with our Citizens Honors Awards as we also honor all who have served in uniform."

The Society created the Citizen Honors Awards in 2008 to recognize Americans who demonstrate the values embodied in the Medal of Honor. Each year, the Society presents five awards to outstanding Americans: two for acts of courage, one for an act of selfless service, one to a young hero under the age of 18 and one to a community-based organization for supporting our Nation's service members.

Medal of Honor recipients carefully review all nominations. Citizen Honors nomination applications, available at www.cmohfoundation.org, will be accepted until November 20, 2016.

The top 20 finalists will be announced on December 1, 2016, and the winners will be announced on December 15, 2016.
