Medal of Honor Recipients Call for Heroes to Recognize
ARLINGTON, Va., Nov. 9, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As Americans honor the service and sacrifice of the men and women who have served in our Armed Forces this Veterans Day, America's Medal of Honor Recipients issued a call for citizens across the Nation to nominate local heroes to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor Society's Citizen Honors Awards. The awards, sponsored by The Boeing Company, will be presented at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., on Friday, March 23, 2018, as part of the annual commemoration of National Medal of Honor Day.
"My fellow Recipients and I are proud to recognize citizens from across the country for their acts of courage and selfless service," said Drew Dix, one of 73 living Medal of Honor Recipients and president of the Society. "This marks the 10th anniversary of our Citizen Honors Awards and its exciting and rewarding to see every year all the heroic things people are doing."
The Society created the Citizen Honors Awards in 2008 to recognize Americans who demonstrate the values embodied in the Medal of Honor. Each year, the Society presents five awards to outstanding Americans: two for acts of courage, one for an act of selfless service, one to a young hero under the age of 18 and one to a community-based organization for supporting our Nation's service members.
Medal of Honor Recipients carefully review all nominations and select the winners. Citizen Honors nomination applications, available at www.themedalofhonor.com, will be accepted until Dec. 29, 2017.
"There is no better time," Dix said, "to nominate the citizen heroes of our Nation for this recognition than while we're honoring all who have served in uniform."
About the Congressional Medal of Honor Society: The Congressional Medal of Honor Society was chartered by the Congress in 1958 to create a brotherhood among the living Medal of Honor Recipients, to protect and uphold the dignity and honor of the Medal, to promote patriotism and love of country, and to inspire our youth to become worthy and dedicated citizens of our nation.
Its membership consists exclusively of those individuals who have received the Medal of Honor. Today, there are 73 living Recipients of the Medal of Honor. The Society is unique in that its membership hopes that there will be no need to welcome new inductees because the Medal is only awarded for action against a hostile force in time of war.
About the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation: The Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation was founded in 1999 by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society to perpetuate the legacy of the Medal. Through character development, scholarship and citizen recognition programs based on the values embodied in the Medal — courage, sacrifice, selfless service and patriotism — the Foundation teaches all citizens that they can make a difference in the lives of others. The Foundation also supports the important work of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with Tax ID #25-1828488, the Foundation carries a rating of 4/4 stars for fiscal management, accountability and transparency from Charity Navigator, America's premiere nonprofit evaluator.
