Medal of Honor Recipient Florent Groberg Brings War on Terror Perspective to Board
ARLINGTON, Va., July 7, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Medal of Honor Recipient Florent Groberg has become the first Recipient from the War on Terror to be appointed to the Board of Directors of the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation, (www.themedalofhonor.com).
The Congressional Medal of Honor Society, consisting of the 71 living Recipients of the Medal of Honor, appointed Groberg to the Foundation Board to fill a vacancy created by the passing of Medal of Honor Recipient Leo Thorsness on May 2. Groberg earned the Medal of Honor as a captain in the U.S. Army while leading a personal security mission in the Kunar Province of Afghanistan on Aug. 8, 2012. He saved numerous lives during that mission, placing himself between the formation of military leaders his team was protecting and a suicide bomber.
"I'm honored to be appointed by my fellow Recipients to serve on the Foundation Board," said Groberg. "I look forward to representing the Society and working with the Foundation staff and the other Board members to inspire all Americans about the Medal and its values."
"I'm certain Flo will be a driving force on the Board to help us communicate the values of courage, sacrifice, selfless service and patriotism to all Americans and especially the young people of our Nation," said Col. (retired) Jack Jacobs, Medal of Honor Recipient and Foundation co-chairman.
Groberg, who retired from the Army in 2015, now serves as the director of Veterans Outreach for The Boeing Company. Groberg also serves on the Board of Directors for Warriors Ethos and is a spokesman on behalf of members of the military and veterans transitioning to the civilian workforce and for those suffering from post-traumatic stress.
"Our young Recipients have great desire and talent and I'm glad we can get more of them involved in leadership positions," said Tom Kelley, Medal of Honor Recipient and president of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. "Flo will be a strong voice on the Foundation Board to ensure we stay focused on the programs that help us perpetuate the legacy of the Medal."
"We're absolutely thrilled Flo is joining our Board," said Louis Chênevert, Foundation co-chairman. "Flo will bring great dedication and enthusiasm to our Board and for our programs as we strive to help the Recipients teach all Americans about the values of courage and sacrifice, commitment and integrity and citizenship and patriotism."
