REDWOOD CITY, Calif., April 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- DigitalPersona, Inc., a global provider of multi-factor authentication and access management solutions, today announced that Mecosta County Medical Center (MCMC) has deployed DigitalPersona® Pro software and U.are.U® Fingerprint Readers as the foundation for a new identity and access management infrastructure. With DigitalPersona Pro software and fingerprint biometrics, MCMC is able to provide unique digital identities to their employees quickly and easily. With these new identities in place, MCMC employees are able to use in-room VMware virtual "follow-me" desktops while ensuring secure access to sensitive patient information.

Mecosta County Medical Center is a 74-bed acute-care hospital with more than 700 employees serving the needs of patients in West-Central Michigan. MCMC evaluated RFID badges and camera identification technology, but selected the combined DigitalPersona software/fingerprint reader solution because it provided the most cost-effective and user-friendly method for unique IDs. DigitalPersona's tight integration with Microsoft Active Directory enabled MCMC to leverage their existing directory infrastructure to create identities and provision security policies across the organization. With the VMware VDI integration, employees can travel between rooms and departments, quickly pulling up their working desktop in each location with only the touch of a finger. MCMC has already experienced an immediate reduction in password reset calls to their helpdesk as a result of this deployment.
"With our new EHR and virtual desktop deployments, we needed a solution that would provide unique user IDs, yet still be easy to use," said Mike Miller, director of IT at Mecosta County Medical Center. "Fingerprint biometrics allowed us to update our identity and access management infrastructure while providing more convenience for our staff, a win-win."
Fingerprint biometrics ties an individual user to each transaction, simplifying the reporting and auditing requirements of regulations such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act. DigitalPersona Pro supports additional forms of authentication, allowing IT administrators to comply with regulatory requirements by developing a multi-factor authentication approach that meets their needs and budget.
"Healthcare professionals require IT departments to implement compliance and security measures in a way that does not disrupt their practice," said Mike Printz, vice president of sales at DigitalPersona. "DigitalPersona Pro allows healthcare organizations, such as Mecosta County Medical Center, to update their individual login procedures without making changes to their workflow."
