Meals on Wheels and Lon Smith Roofing Honor WWII Widow
Hurst resident gets a free, new roof
FORT WORTH, Texas, Aug. 9, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Meals on Wheels of Tarrant County and Lon Smith Roofing joined today in honoring a local hero—Jessie Prescott, a 92-year-old widow of a World War II paratrooper. The two organizations presented Ms. Prescott with a new and free roof as part of the "Roof for Vets" program."
"Not all the heroes of our military wear uniforms," said David Cox, President of Lon Smith Roofing. "The families of our servicemembers also serve. They stay home but they are very important to our national security. Ms. Prescott is a great example of this. Her husband served as a paratrooper in World War II. Now that her husband is deceased, we wanted to honor him and honor her by installing a free roof at her house."
Ms. Prescott worked as a lunch lady for many years at several elementary schools in the Hurst area. Even though she is now retired, she still fondly remembers the kids she served meals to everyday in the schools. Her home in Hurst has a roof that contains leaks and that has created interior damage inside the house. She has needed a new roof for some time but hasn't had the resources to pay for one.
The Roof for Vets program was begun in 2014 by Lon Smith Roofing as a way to honor local veterans and their families. Each quarter of the year, a veteran is chosen based on financial need and roof damage. The Lon Smith team then arrives to install the new roof at no charge. Several of these installations have been for veterans who are also served by Meals on Wheels. The partnership between Lon Smith Roofing and Meals on Wheels is a long and deep one. Lon Smith founder Judy Smith has served on the Meals on Wheels board for many years
