McKool Smith Named Law360 "Intellectual Property Group of the Year"
DALLAS, Jan. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- McKool Smith has been named the "Intellectual Property Group of the Year" by Law360. The firm was selected based on the significance, size, and complexity of its intellectual property litigation wins between Nov. 1, 2012 and Nov. 1, 2013.
Since November 2012, McKool Smith's intellectual property (IP) litigation practice has secured a string of high-profile courtroom victories amounting to more than $570 million in verdicts and judgments for its clients. These wins include a $173 million verdict for ParkerVision Inc. against Qualcomm Inc., a $368 million verdict for VirnetX Holding Corp. against Apple Inc., and a $15 million verdict for Summit 6 against Samsung, among others.
As noted by Law360, "McKool Smith's IP accomplishments weren't limited to the district courts. Indeed, the firm scored two notable victories in the Federal Circuit in 2013."
In May, the Federal Circuit upheld the firm's $391 million judgment for Versata Software Inc. against SAP America, Inc. and its parent company SAP AG. The case was argued by firm co-founder and Chairman Mike McKool. The following month, the Federal Circuit ruled in favor of firm client Ultramercial, reviving its patent infringement suit against WildTangent, Inc. concerning Internet advertising technology. Lawrence Hadley, a principal in the firm's Los Angeles office, argued the case, which was highlighted in Law360's listing of "New Fed. Circ. Rulings That Will Shape Future IP Cases" due to its anticipated impact on patent eligibility for software-implemented inventions.
2013 proved to be a banner year for McKool Smith and its intellectual property litigation practice. The firm was awarded U.S. "Plaintiff IP Firm of the Year" by Managing IP and recognized in The National Law Journal's annual "Plaintiffs' Hotlist." McKool Smith was also awarded "IP Firm of the Year (South)" by Benchmark Litigation and named one of the "Most Feared Plaintiffs Firms" by Law360. In December, the firm closed out the year on a high note by securing a complete defense verdict for Bush Hog, Inc., and parent company Alamo Group Inc., in a patent infringement suit brought by Deere & Co.
With more than 185 trial lawyers across offices in Austin, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Marshall, New York, Silicon Valley, and Washington, DC, McKool Smith has established a reputation as one of America's leading trial firms. Over the past eight years, the firm has secured eight nine-figure jury verdicts, as well as seven eight-figure jury verdicts. The firm has also won more National Law Journal and VerdictSearch "Top 100 Verdicts" over the last five years than any other law firm in the country. Courtroom successes like these have earned McKool Smith critical acclaim and helped the firm become what The Wall Street Journal describes as "one of the biggest law firm success stories of the past decade." McKool Smith represents leading clients in complex commercial litigation, intellectual property, bankruptcy, and white collar defense matters.
