Virginia Bar Association Program Offers Free and Reduced Legal Services to Returning Veterans

RICHMOND, Va., Oct. 31, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- McGuireWoods LLP announced today its support of The Virginia Bar Association's (VBA) annual Veterans Legal Services Month program in November, a statewide campaign to provide free or reduced-cost legal services to assist veterans returning to the Commonwealth.

As Virginia veterans return home from overseas service, many face various legal challenges, including domestic relations issues, creditor or landlord disputes, or employment challenges. To help ease such legal burdens, Governor Bob McDonnell issued a proclamation last November in support of the inaugural campaign. This year, Gov. McDonnell will join the VBA, members of the legal community and Virginia veterans for a celebratory kickoff event at McGuireWoods' Richmond office to mark the beginning of the month-long call to action for lawyers in Virginia. The event will be co-sponsored by the VBA, McGuireWoods, and Hunton & Williams LLP.

"With such a strong military presence in Virginia, this campaign will have a profound impact on countless servicemen and women, as well as their families, throughout the Commonwealth," said Stephen Busch, a partner at McGuireWoods and immediate past president of the VBA. "It is our hope that every attorney from Virginia law firms and law departments will volunteer a few hours of their time to help veterans."

The VBA will also host a fundraiser starting on Nov. 4 through Veterans Day to raise awareness and donations for Helping Military Veterans through Higher Education (HMVHE), which is a consortium of Virginia colleges and universities that are coordinating their schools' resources to assist Virginia's veterans and military service members with their legal, medical, and Veteran Benefits needs.
