McGraw-Hill Federal Credit Union Embarks on Green Energy Awareness Campaign and "Solar CD" as Community Support Shines
EAST WINDSOR, N.J., Feb. 1, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- While some credit unions enjoy basking in the spotlight, McGraw-Hill Federal Credit Union's most recent initiative has placed it in the sunshine and has a core group of consumers glowing. In an effort to boost awareness about renewable energy and an innovative solar panel project at The McGraw-Hill Companies' offices in East Windsor, the McGraw-Hill Federal Credit Union has launched a multi-pronged solar energy awareness campaign which includes an informational website, Facebook updates, and presentations at the credit union's Financial Literacy Series.
The new website, accessible through www.SolarCD.org, provides background on McGraw-Hill Companies' solar energy project, facts and tips for those considering the use of solar energy, and links to external websites for a more comprehensive insight into solar energy. Additionally, plans are underway to incorporate green energy advice into McGraw-Hill Federal Credit Union's monthly Financial Literacy Series seminars. Response to the awareness effort has been glowing.
"It is truly a comprehensive source for individuals who care about the environment and want to educate themselves on what they can do to support the environment," said Shawn Gilfedder, President and CEO, McGraw-Hill Federal Credit Union.
The inspiration for the renewable energy campaign came following The McGraw-Hill Companies' announcement to construct one of the nation's largest solar energy projects on its property in Hightstown, N.J. The solar project will generate 14.1 megawatts of energy and significantly offset the need for other energy sources to run their offices in East Windsor, including the company's growing data center.
"We were eager to support this initiative by showing our members how to make a difference and created www.SolarCD.org as a resource to get them started," said Mr. Gilfedder.
Holly Kelter, a member of the credit union since 1986, was drawn to the opportunity to educate herself about solar energy and used the website as an educational resource at home. "McGraw-Hill Federal Credit Union created a teachable opportunity that went beyond the scope of what I would have expected from a financial institution. It was great to see my credit union bring awareness to an issue that impacts the environment," she said.
Earlier this year, the credit union launched a "Solar CD" which yielded a sunny response: 160 certificates were opened. These members were also warmed with a wealth of informational resources on green energy via mail, website, Facebook, and during the Financial Literacy Series seminars.
"The entire awareness effort is a win-win for our members and for the environment," said Mr. Gilfedder.
Robert Maitner, a credit union member for more than 30 years, could not agree more. "I liked earning a great rate on the CD, but it felt even better knowing that I was connected to something so meaningful," Maitner explained.
The solar facility sits on nearly 70 acres of land across the street from The McGraw-Hill Companies offices in East Windsor, N.J. It is reportedly the largest privately-owned, net metered solar project in the Western Hemisphere. The project is being coordinated with the involvement of NJR Clean Ventures (a subsidiary of New Jersey Resources), which promotes increased energy efficiency and the use of clean, renewable sources of energy, including solar, wind, geothermal, and sustainable biomass.
"It is wonderful to see the passion that went into this project, being echoed in the positive response to our Solar CD. It demonstrates just how much our membership cares about the environment," stressed Gilfedder.
