McGraw-Hill Education Leader and University of Chicago Everyday Mathematics Author Address President Obama's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology

NEW YORK, April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- With the Obama administration squarely focused on increasing the quality of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education in U.S. schools to improve America's global competitiveness, a presidential advisory council has been mobilized, and McGraw-Hill has been taking part. On April 15, the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) assembled the nation's top thought leaders in STEM education to discuss policy and best practices during a special day-long workshop in Washington, D.C.

An expert on K-12 education and instructional technology, McGraw-Hill's Dan Caton was invited to participate in the workshop. Caton, executive vice president and leader of McGraw-Hill's Learning Solutions Centers, discussed how innovative technology and personalized instruction could enhance student engagement in STEM subjects. In addition, he talked about how well-researched, classroom-tested and scalable teaching and learning solutions in the STEM field could be developed through private/public partnerships.  

Andy Isaacs, co-director of the University of Chicago's Center for Elementary Mathematics and Science Education (CEMSE) and author of the Everyday Mathematics program distributed by McGraw-Hill, also was invited to participate in the event.  Isaacs discussed the importance of developing and sustaining innovative math curriculum and providing additional support for instructional programs in large urban school districts.

Guest speakers at the workshop also included several members of the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Defense, the White House's STEM Education Working Group, the National Science Foundation and others.
