DALLAS, March 21, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- To kick-off STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) testing with a nutritious start, select McDonald's restaurants are offering free breakfast to 3rd-8th grade students on Tuesday, March 28 from 5:30 to 10:30 a.m. McDonald's markets participating in this year's STAAR Free Breakfast program include, Abilene, Amarillo, Austin, Lubbock, North Texas, San Angelo, San Antonio, Waco/Temple and Wichita Falls.
"McDonald's is proud to support students looking to get a jump start on their day with wholesome breakfast options," said Carina Saez, McDonald's Registered Dietitian. "Research shows us that eating breakfast improves academic performance and can even improve standardized test scores. By offering a balanced breakfast, McDonald's hopes to make a positive impact on students' mornings."
Children who visit inside the restaurant at participating McDonald's restaurant with a parent or guardian will receive their choice of an Egg White Delight McMuffin Sandwich or Fruit and Maple Oatmeal, Apple Slices and their choice of 1 percent low-fat milk or Minute Maid Apple Juice. Teachers are also invited to participate in this offer with proof of a valid school identification card.
"Over the past three years we've provided free breakfast to more than 100,000 students and teachers through the STAAR Free Breakfast Program," said Joe Jasper, Texas McDonald's Owner. "We're looking forward to supporting education in our community once and again and inviting even more participants to our restaurants in 2017."
According to data from the Food Research and Action Center, students who are undernourished have poorer cognitive functioning when they miss breakfast. However, students who eat breakfast the morning of a standardized test have significantly higher scores in spelling, reading, and math, compared to students who do not eat breakfast.
Before visiting the restaurant for STAAR Free Breakfast on Tuesday, March 28, community members from the participating markets are encouraged to check with their local McDonald's for final details.
