WASHINGTON, July 12, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The International Aviation Club of Washington, D.C. (IAC) and Aviation Week Network announced today a first in the history of L. Welch Pogue Lifetime Achievement Award in Aviation. The Award will be presented jointly to four former U.S. Government officials whose long careers were dedicated to serving the public through the liberalization of passenger and cargo air transport markets around the globe, and also the approval of immunized joint venture alliances.
The 2018 Pogue recipients are Susan McDermott, Bob Goldner, Paul Gretch and Mary Street.
McDermott served as U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Deputy Assistant Secretary from 2000 to 2018 and Assistant Director for Negotiations from 1987 to 2000 in the Office of Aviation and International Affairs. She helped develop and lead the Department's liberalization efforts, including the first Open Skies agreement with the Netherlands and helped facilitate the Department's approval of the first international airline joint venture between Northwest and KLM.
Goldner served as Special Counsel within the DOT's Office of Aviation and International Affairs from 1985 to 2018, where he guided decisions on international route awards, U.S. Open Skies policy, and antitrust immunity approvals for international joint ventures, among countless other aviation issues.
Gretch served as DOT Director of Office of International Aviation from 1987 to 2016, where he had a central role in devising and carrying out U.S. Open Skies policy and supervising the negotiation of over 100 Open Skies Agreements. Gretch negotiated a number of these agreements, most notably the U.S.-E.U. Agreement.
Street served as Assistant Director for Negotiations within the DOT Office of International Aviation until 2013, where she supported the negotiation, interpretation, and enforcement of countless bilateral agreements, including the U.S.-E.U. Agreement. Over four decades of public service, Street worked tirelessly to ensure that U.S. stakeholders were not discriminated against in international aviation, and she also mentored countless career officials at DOT.
"The work of these former career public servants made air travel more affordable and accessible for families, increased travel options for consumers around the globe, and generated new jobs and economic growth in the U.S. aviation industry. We owe them a great debt of gratitude and recognition for their service," said Bob Letteney, IAC board member and Chair of the Pogue Award Committee.
"It is wonderful and very fitting that the 2018 L. Welch Pogue Award is being bestowed on these recipients, each of whom is highly regarded by all those in aviation who have benefited from their work and diligence," said Aviation Week Network President, Greg Hamilton. Aviation Week created the L. Welch Pogue Award in 1994.
This year's honorees will be celebrated at the L. Welch Pogue Award Dinner at Jones Day, 51 Louisiana Avenue NW, Washington, D.C., on September 12, 2018. Details of the event and ticket information can be found at www.iacwashington.org.
