Mayors Against Illegal Guns To Air New Ads Ahead Of Upcoming Senate Vote On Manchin-Toomey Background Check Legislation

New Bipartisan Legislation From Senators Toomey and Manchin Would Expand Background Checks for Commercial Gun Sales; www.DemandAction.org

NEW YORK, April 12, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Mayors Against Illegal Guns today released a new television ad calling on Senators to support bipartisan legislation by Senator Joe Manchin and Senator Pat Toomey that would require background checks for commercial gun sales – including at gun shows and online.  A vote on the bill is expected next week.  The new ad can be seen here: http://www.DemandAction.org/thebill

The ad will air in Washington, DC and in states – represented by both Democrats and Republicans – where it can most influence the upcoming Senate vote.  Those states include:

Louisiana – Senator Mary Landrieu (D)
Nevada – Senator Dean Heller (R)
New Hampshire – Senator Kelly Ayotte (R)
North Dakota – Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D)
Tennessee – Senator Lamar Alexander (R) and Senator Bob Corker (R)

The ad urges viewers to call their senators and urge them to join the bipartisan effort for comprehensive background checks.  The coalition also released a fact sheet on the Manchin-Toomey bill earlier this week. 

Mayors Against Illegal Guns also announced earlier this week that it is airing ads in Florida that highlight how Senator Marco Rubio's threats to filibuster a vote on commonsense reforms like comprehensive background checks would make Floridians less safe.  Looking past Florida and toward a likely run for the presidency, Rubio's threat to filibuster is a play for NRA support and defies the 91 percent of Floridians who want background checks for all gun sales.
