Just Days after President Barack Obama proclaims September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, prostate cancer survivors and supporters join the Mayor of Newton as they walk and run to increase awareness for this important cause.
BOSTON and NEWTON, Mass., Sept. 9, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Sunday, September 15, 2013, Meteorologist Harvey Leonard will join Mayor Setti Warren to MC the 2013 Boston Prostate Cancer Walk & 5K.
WHY: Prostate Cancer is the most common major malignancy in the United States, striking as many as 1 in 6 men. Even though it is curable when detected early, prostate cancer is the second most lethal malignancy in men, killing an American man every 18 minutes in 2013. African American men are 60% more likely to be diagnosed and 250% more likely to die. And yet, current screening tools such as the PSA test has created such a considerable controversy that recently, major medical and government organizations recommended against its routine use. This situation has left men and their health care providers without a clear approach to early detection, which is critical for saving lives.
WHAT: The goal of this year's Prostate Cancer Walk & 5K 2013 is to awareness of the current advances in prevention, diagnosis and treatment so that men, their caregivers and their physicians will be empowered to make informed and shared decisions on PSA screening and other health care options. Funds raised this year will support a statewide effort to create a state action plan to combat this preventable disease. The Dana Farber Cancer Institute will provide free counseling and screening at the event via the Blum Family Resource Van.
EVENT: The event takes place at the Boston College, Chestnut Hill Campus. Parking is available at the Commonwealth Ave Garage on campus. Public transportation is available through Green Line at BC stop. Registration will open at 8:00 am at O'Neill Plaza next to the Campus Library. The opening ceremony will start at 8:45 am. The 5K Run will start at 9:00 am and the 1-mile walk will leave the starting line at 9:15 am. Closing ceremonies and award will be presented at 10:30.
