Mayor Bloomberg and Members of House of Representatives to Announce Legislation to Fix Gun Checks
NEW YORK, March 14, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Mayors Against Illegal Guns co-chair Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg will join members of the House of Representatives on Tuesday to announce House legislation to fix the nation's broken background check system. The bill will match comprehensive legislation recently introduced by Senator Charles E. Schumer, which was modeled after a proposal developed by Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
The common sense legislation stiffens penalties for states that fail to report drug abusers, domestic violence offenders, and mentally ill individuals to the national do-not-sell list. President Obama called for similar increases to penalties in his Sunday op-ed in the Arizona Daily Star. The legislation will also require that all gun sales, including those by private sellers, be subject to a background check.
