Maximizing Competency Education and Blended Learning: Insights from Experts
CompetencyWorks report highlights findings for implementing blended, competency-based education
WASHINGTON, March 18, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- CompetencyWorks released a new report written by Susan Patrick and Chris Sturgis today, titled Maximizing Competency Education and Blended Learning: Insights from Experts.
Chris Sturgis, principal at MetisNet, said, "It's no longer a viable educational model to rely on a one-size-fits-all curriculum that leaves students with huge gaps in foundational content knowledge. We live in a world that requires us to rethink education, opening up opportunities for personalization and ensuring students get the instructional support they need to succeed."
Transforming a school or district requires extraordinary leadership, a commitment at all levels, and a clear vision. The findings in this report provide insights, lessons learned by early adopters, and recommendations to advance the field of personalized learning.
To assist school and district leaders in their efforts, the report emphasizes five fundamental conditions that are required to shift to personalized learning models:
- Leadership: Updating the Human Capital Pipeline
- Resources: Innovating Along a Continuum
- Supportive Policy
- Data Infrastructure and Technology Ecosystem
- Community Engagement and Public Will
Susan Patrick, President and CEO of the International Association of K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL), said, "Technology has changed how we think about the future of education. By focusing on the research on how students learn, teachers are rethinking and redesigning instructional models to personalize instruction for students. In these new personalized approaches, technology is not the driver, but blended learning enables increased access to high-quality content and personalization at scale in ways never before possible."
In May 2014, twenty-three technical assistance providers convened to discuss the implementation of new learning models, to share knowledge and expertise, and to discuss next steps to advance the field toward blended, competency-based education. The convening findings informed this report, which discusses the implications of personalized learning as a main pillar of school design, structured around ensuring equity and quality.
