COLUMBIA, Md., Sept. 14, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Maxim Healthcare Services and Leavitt Partners today released a new white paper titled: "Regulatory Frameworks for Community Health Worker Programs." The paper outlines state approaches to community health worker (CHW) programs and identifies 12 components that contribute to a successful CHW program with positive outcomes.
"As an employer of over 53,000 caregivers nationwide, Maxim is focused on how we can continuously adapt to improve the quality and affordability of healthcare for our patients, employees and partners," said Maxim CEO Bill Butz. "Therefore, we recognize the community health worker profession has great potential to improve care delivery while also offering a gateway into the healthcare workforce. We supported this research project in an effort to further advance the national conversation around the development and recognition of this profession."
Health reforms in recent years have opened the door to greater use of CHWs due to their role in working with higher-risk populations. CHWs have the ability to decrease costs and improve patient outcomes in the communities they serve. As a result, providers, payers and state policymakers are taking steps to incorporate them into their health delivery systems.
Maxim manages community health workers to help chronically ill patients at high risk for avoidable utilization due to a high degree of medical, psychological, functional and socioeconomic complexity. Maxim CHWs are uniquely trained to mitigate barriers to care, act as a liaison to existing healthcare services and focus on a wide range of care management issues such as transportation, housing, employment and the coordination of medical services.
