Matt Fritsche Named Hillsdale College Women's Basketball Coach
HILLSDALE, Mich., May 19, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Hillsdale College is pleased to announce the hiring of Matthew Fritsche as head women's basketball coach. Fritsche will become the seventh women's head coach in the history of the program.
Fritsche comes to Hillsdale following a very successful four-year stint as an assistant coach for the women's basketball team at Creighton University in Nebraska. During his tenure at Creighton, the team advanced to the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament all four years, including advancing to the Round of 32 in 2017.
"Coach Fritsche's background has prepared him very well for our position," said Hillsdale College Director of Athletics Don Brubacher. "His disposition, teaching style and systems of play fit Hillsdale College in every respect. We are excited to have him join the Charger family."
Fritsche was deeply involved in all aspects of the Creighton program, from opposition scouting and practice plans to recruiting and player development. During Fritsche's tenure, they had an overall record of 78-54. During the 2016-17 season, Creighton improved by seven wins over the 2015-16 season. Improvement in his teams and players has been a constant theme throughout Fritsche's coaching career, at all levels of the sport.
Prior to joining the coaching staff at Creighton, Fritsche coached at Midland University in Fremont, Nebraska, where the team showed substantial improvement even in his single season with the program.
Before rising to collegiate level, Fritsche spent 10 years as the head varsity girls' basketball coach at Bellevue West High School, during which time the team ascended to the very top of the Nebraska prep ranks. His team advanced to states six times in a seven-year span. Fritsche led the team to three state championships (2007, 2009, 2010) and one state runner-up finish (2011).
Between 2009 and 2011, Fritsche was named coach of the year by nine different organizations in Nebraska, including being named the 2010 Omaha World-Herald Coach of the Year and the 2009 Lincoln Journal Star Coach of the Year.
Fritsche is a 1999 graduate of the University of Nebraska-Kearney, where he received a bachelor of arts in education. He earned a master's degree in education from Doane College in Nebraska.
