Math Curriculum Created for NY State is Now #1 Nationwide
WASHINGTON, April 20, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Eureka Math/EngageNY, only three years old, is now the most widely used math curriculum in the United States, according to a new study released by the RAND Corporation. The findings underscore the significant shifts in the K-12 textbook market as educators embrace high expectations, innovation, and choice.
Of 1,168 teachers responding to a nationwide survey, 57% of elementary school and 47% of secondary teachers said they use either Eureka Math or the version of this curriculum developed for EngageNY.org. This surpasses the use of any other curricula, particularly at the elementary level where the next most popular curriculum is used by just 32% of teachers.
Usage is particularly high among New York educators. Top classroom teachers and mathematicians from around the country wrote the curriculum during a two-year collaboration with New York state led by the nonprofit Great Minds. Many New York teachers and mathematicians served as lead writers.
"It was an incredibly powerful experience for me as a teacher to collaborate with other educators and math experts to write a curriculum that is clear, cohesive, and emphasizes conceptual understanding of math and strong computational skills," said Saffron VanGalder, an elementary school math coach in Van Etten, New York, and a Eureka Math/EngageNY writer. "I see how it helps kids in my school every day, and I'm so glad to hear other teachers nationwide are also having success with it."
Among those are educators in Bethel, Washington. "I've never experienced anything so powerful in education," said Kelley Boynton, executive director for elementary education of Bethel Public Schools. "Our students can now solve unbelievably complex problems and share their thinking with pride and enthusiasm. We have been changed forever."
EdReports.org, an independent non-profit that reviews curricula, gives Eureka Math/EngageNY the highest ratings in all categories (focus/coherence, rigor, and usability in the classroom). Although schools are generally in their first or second year of using the curriculum, many are already seeing improvements on nationally recognized tests. Eureka Math/EngageNY is the first cohesive math curriculum for grades PK-12 completely aligned to the new standards. It is available in print and online, where anyone can download it for free.
