Massive Tarps Shipment Sent from Tarps Plus to Oklahoma Tornado Victims
NORMAN, Okla., May 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Heavy storms ripped through the southern Plains killing five people and injuring dozens more, leaving homes behind without roofs and in some cases demolishing the home entirely. Many victims need tarps to cover their roofs to make sure the aftermath of storms would not further damage their home. Many local hardware stores were sold out of poly tarps, which is the common material used for that application. Tarps Plus, the leading tarps supplier in North America, has worked around the clock to get tarps to the tornado stricken area.
Many tornadoes have been reported in Kansas and Oklahoma since Tuesday after the storms rushed through the area, raining grapefruit sized hail while leaving thousands of people without power.
"We will not close our doors at night if people need tarps," said Angelina Urquart, the regional manager for Tarps Plus. "This is what we do and there are many people that are counting on us."
The state has reported more than 60 people have been injured. Ernie Willis, Emergency Management Director, stated that the town of Seminole's airport suffered extensive damage and several planes there were destroyed. Oklahoma's Department of Emergency Management has reported more than 65,000 homes and businesses were without power and water.
The Storm Prediction Center at Norman predicted tornadoes, stating that the atmosphere was the perfect mixture of winds, heat and moisture. One particular tornado landed east of the center's building on the University of Oklahoma campus.
Many residents in the area have homes still standing but without a roof creating a major need for tarps and roof covers. The majority of the tarps that shipped in are being distributed by the city and local, private organizations.
