Mason Tenders District Council Endorses Christine Quinn
17,000-Member Union Backs City Council Speaker for Mayor
NEW YORK, Feb. 14, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Mason Tenders District Council Political Action Committee (MTDCPAC), the political arm of the 17,000-member Mason Tenders District Council (MTDC), announced today its endorsement of City Council Speaker Christine Quinn for Mayor.
"Throughout her career Christine Quinn has been a fighter and advocate for our issues and members," said Robert Bonanza, business manager of the Mason Tenders District Council, and chairman of the MTDCPAC. "Our members are decent, hardworking, middle-class New Yorkers, who get up every morning, send their kids to our public schools, work hard, play by the rules and struggle to survive in this great city. In Christine Quinn we have not only an advocate, but a true kindred spirit who shares our hopes, values and dreams."
"As someone who grew up as a middle class kid, in a middle class neighborhood, the support of the hardworking members of the Mason Tenders District Council means a great deal to me, personally," said Christine Quinn. "Not a day goes by as City Council Speaker where I am not thinking about how we make life just a little bit easier for the hard working men and women who work day in and day out to make this City the greatest in the world. I am grateful for the support, the vote of confidence and the recognition of the Mason Tenders District Council that we truly are kindred spirits."
The MTDC is the umbrella organization for five affiliated local unions of the Laborers' International Union of North America. Affiliated unions include: Asbestos, Lead & Hazardous Waste Laborers' Local 78; Construction & General Building Laborers' Local 79; General Building Laborers' Local 66; Waste Recycling & General Industrial Laborers' Local 108, and; Lay Faculty Association Local 1261.
"The issues that are important to our members are the issues that have always been the centerpiece of Speaker Quinn's career in public service: good jobs, responsible development, affordable housing, quality public education, fairness and respect to all workers, and support for a thriving, growing middle class. As Mayor we know she will work to achieve those goals and make this City a better place for all New Yorkers," said Mike McGuire, MTDCPAC director.
The MTDCPAC is one of the most politically aggressive labor/political organizations in New York. A politically well-educated and highly-motivated volunteer member base, along with the highest per capita contribution rate of any labor PAC in New York State, combines to create a force to be reckoned with. While normally operating below the public radar, the MTDCPAC is very well known to the elected officials of New York State and City. With a history of bipartisan support for elected officials who support the issues of importance to its members, as well as playing a pivotal role as a founding member of the WFP, the MTDCPAC covers all facets of the political spectrum. A candidacy endorsed by the MTDC can expect strong financial support and a virtual army of orange-clad volunteers in the streets from the MTDCPAC.
